The slaying of a professional football player during an attempted robbery led to a multitude of home security articles on the web and elsewhere. Many people want to know what they can do to keep such a situation from happening. This might be resolved with a home security door lock that bolts more securely than their existing model.
When reading home security articles, several themes will be common to most of them. Having a good home security lock on every exterior door and keeping them locked is universal. Many will also recommend using alarms and home security services, but locks are the obvious first line of defense.
A lock is worthless if it isn’t used, so all family members should get in the habit of locking doors. Please don’t keep a spare key in an obvious hiding place, such as on top of a door frame or under the welcome mat. If you are afraid of accidentally locking yourself out, leave a spare key with a neighbor you trust, or put one in a lock box with a code.
Home security articles will also mention often mention the different kinds of locks, and how safe each type is. An old lock using a skeleton key is quite clearly not a great idea, but many modern locks are too easy to defeat as well. If you can get in with a credit card, so can anyone else.
It’s also important the security lock use the correct box. It needs to be bolted into the door frame with at least three inch nails or screws. And, it should have a kick proof rating. The bolt itself needs to be an inch and a half long, at least. If there is a glass pane in the vicinity, the lock needs to be special to prevent a criminal from breaking the pane and reaching around to unbolt the lock. Remember to check local codes.
Home Security Articles contain a theme on what should be done if locks and alarms fail when I am at home. If possible I could hide in the closet with my cell phone dialing 911.It is better not to directly face the intruder and remember the details of the intruder as far as possible. It is better not to face this situation by using strong locks.
Since the tragic death of NFL player Sean Taylor, there have been numerous home security articles and an increased interest in the security measures you can take to avoid such an occurrence. For many people, this will mean a new home security door lock that is an improvement over the one they currently have. An unsecured home security lock is pretty useless! If you feel the need to hide spare keys for those who lose them or forget to take them along, don’t place them under a mat, rock or other such place. Consider leaving spare keys with a trusted neighbor or put them in a coded lock box.
